Carob is the ground seed pod of the carob tree, which is quite common in Mediterranean countries, and is also known as St John's bread. Carob powder is often used as a substitute for cocoa and has a sweet, slightly toffee-like flavour. It is rich in vitamins and minerals (e.g. calcium) and contains no caffeine or oxalic acid.
